April 7 is World Health Day, so we are encouraging you to learn your family health history. Even though you cannot change your genetic makeup, knowing your family health history can help you reduce your risk of developing health problems.

Meet Ilene Iskoe, she has been involved with Susan G. Komen for 19 years with her team, Tradition.

“I became consciously aware of breast cancer when my mother was diagnosed when I was 28. A few of my mother’s sisters were also diagnosed along with a first cousin so I began to get annual mammograms.

Knowing my family history, I became passionate about learning all I could about breast cancer and committed to walking and fundraising.

Fortunately, when I was diagnosed at age 56…I was mentally prepared.”

Ilene makes raising awareness about breast cancer fun by walking annually with her team, Traditions, a group of family and friends. Her team grows each year, and she loves the chance to connect with everyone!

Ilene’s fundraising tip — “Share your story with everyone…you will be amazed that anyone you talk to has a close friend or family member that has dealt with breast cancer.”
